Here are the four key planning steps.

Plan for the weather: Is there a chance of rain and flooding? What are the high and low temperatures expected for the days you plan to be out?

Gain knowledge of the location: Let's assume you're planning to explore a national park. You can begin by visiting the website, social media, blogs, and asking local outfitters and others that have visited the location.

Can you think of some things that would be beneficial to know about the location where you will be hiking or camping?

Are there marked trails?

Does the campground offer electric hook-ups?

Can I bring my dog?

Tell someone before you leave: As a safety precaution always tell someone where you will be staying and the route you will be hiking This is important just in case you were to get lost or hurt, someone would know where to begin looking. Another key safety tip is to invite someone to join you. Two hikers are safer than hiking alone.

Tip: Beginners Hiking Guide: Hiking Tips, Safety Tips & Checklist

Tip: Explore some of the most popular national parks or browse the full list of all the parks in the National Park System here

Remember to Pack the Right Hiking Essentials

Just like many outdoor outings, packing your hiking gear can make or break your experience particularly if your are taking the kids.

Parts of a hiking boot photo credit Athlete Audit

One of the first things to consider is the proper footwear. When you hit the trail, you don’t want to think about your feet. It’s all about taking in the view, the wonder of nature along the way, and the beauty of being out there. A hiking boot that hits all the marks when it comes to comfort, fit, and performance is the way to go.

How to Choose the Right Hiking Boot or Shoe

When choosing your hiking footwear you need to consider 4 different things.

1. Destination: Think about where you will be hiking and what type of terrain you will be in. Will it be desert, mountain, water, gravel trail or a paved trail?

2. Boot Fit Considerations: The arch height, foot width, injuries or disabilities all factor into getting the most comfortable hiking boot fit possible. For example:

Low Cut Hiking Shoe or High Cut Hiking Boots - Consider wearing a mid-cut-hiking boot they are the go to shoe. This will help protect you from the elements and animals and help with stability, especially if carrying a heavy load.

Hiking Boot Mid-Sole - The mid-sole of a boot provides cushioning, buffers feet from shock and mostly controls the boot’s stiffness. You may think stiff boots can't be a good thing, but for long hikes on rocky, uneven ground they can mean better comfort so your feet won't wear out and stability.

Hiking Boot Outer Sole - Two more boot safety considerations for choosing a hiking boot or shoe. A snug fit at the heel. This enhances the heel brake which is the raised heel zone of your boot. This area helps to reduce the chance of sliding and falling on steep descents. Number two is the lug pattern and depth of your hiker. Lugs are the bumps on the outer-sole foot bottom. If you're backpacking or mountaineering you'll want deeper and thicker lugs for improved grip. Also, lugs spaced widely provide good traction and will shed mud more easily.

Tip: Check out the Anatomy of a Hiking Boot by Athlete Audit

Tip: Backpacking 101: Planning & Preparation

3. The Type of Hiking Trip You've Planned: Are you doing an overnight hike and need a tent? Might you be exposed to wet conditions like rain or crossing rivers and streams? Day and night temperature highs and lows are very important for your physical comfort and hydration.

Tip: Buying a Tent? Here's a Guide to Make the Perfect Choice (infographic)

4. Waterproof Boots and Shoes: Generally recommended if hiking on an overnight trip. Wet shoes and feet can ruin a trip.

5. Always Try on Boots and Shoes: Try on at least two different pairs to compare the contrast in fit, comfort, and stability. Hiking boots should fit your foot snug everywhere and never tight plus plus they should have room to wiggle your toes. For a real feel, try them on with the socks you will be wearing. Best time to try on shoes is at the end of the day (after feet swell).

Tip: Another test of worthiness is to mimic some of hiking conditions by trying your boots on with a backpack and walking around the shoe department. See if you can find a few stairs to replicate hiking situations. Once you've decided, wear them often to break them in prior to your hike.

Our Experts Recommend the Targhee Boot Collection From KEEN

KEEN Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking
Boots for Men.
Bass Pro Shops/Cabela's Exclusive!

The award-winning Targhee collection offers trail-tested favorites for men and women. Also, it helps with moisture wicking to keep the skin as dry as possible to help prevent blisters and chafing.

Dressing in layers must match the climate conditions you are in, your activity level, and your thermostat.

You might be wondering why not just wear 100% cotton? While cotton still a fabric of choice in casual wear, it has no real place for the outdoors anymore. Cotton has no wicking features; it stays wet longer, which can make you chilly, especially if it is windy. Instead, you need to look for synthetic fabrics "blends" of cotton and polyester. Today you can even find clothing with a UPF value (ultraviolet protection factor) for sun protection and insect repellent.

Layered clothing breaks into three principal layers: Base, Mid, and Outer. These three layers act in unison, but individually each layer performs specific functions.

How Do You Layer Up for Hiking in Any Weather?

Hot-Weather Layers

Look for light colored clothing like white, khaki or tan that is loose-fitting synthetic fabric blends like nylon and polyester. For hot weather, cotton can be worn as well. Your clothing should allow for breathability for comfort from sweating in your clothes.

Rainy-Weather Layers

Lightweight hoodie, well ventilated lightweight waterproof and breathable rain jacket and pants. Plus waterproof hiking boots or shoes and waterproof gaiters. Consider base or mid-weight layers, your goal is to cover your skin with a stretch layer to keep a jacket off your skin.

Layer 1: Base Layer - For Wicking Away Moisture

The base layer is the wicking layer that wicks moisture away from the skin. The base layer is the first layer of clothing your wear that directly contacts your skin. A base layer should fit snug. This fit lets the material quickly wick away moisture from your skin keeping you dry and warm. Base layers come in three different layer weights; lightweight, midweight and heavyweight. Light weight has better moisture wicking with less insulation, and used in warmer areas. The heavyweight more insulation less moisture weekend, used in colder climates.

Shop bass layers for men, shop base layers for ladies, shop base layers for kids

Layer 2: Middle Layer - For Insulation

The middle layer garments are for insulation and warmth by trapping the warm the body generates. Polyester fleece is a common middle layer that stays warm even if it gets damp, and it dries fast. Fleece also breathes well, so you’re less likely to overheat in it.

Layer 3: Outer Layer - For Protection

The outer layer garments are designed to protect you from the weather. This layer is commonly called the shell as it protects against wind, rain, and snow. For example you would use a waterproof jacket for rain or windproof or down jacket for the cold.

Tip: How to Layer Clothing

Now that you are properly dressed let’s talk about the importance of knowing where you are during your hike all of the times.

Easy Orienteering Tips Anyone Can Use

In this age of digital technology, stand-alone GPS devices and smartphones with GPS technology are increasingly people’s go-to navigational aids. But over-reliance on these devices is increasing the number of mountain rescue across the world.

How to Use a Topographical Map

When Hiking With a Map: To begin, you should orient to mimic the environment, which means if headed north, you will see the map right side up, while if hiking south, your map will be upside down.

The Attack Point: This point on your map is the location in which you are hiking and will help guide you—for instance, a river or trailhead.

The Topographical Lines on the Map: These lines represent the hills and valleys of the land. They also present you with some of the easiest-to-follow landmarks in any landscape. Knowing your starting location and ending location on the map, it is easy to choose routes that follow ridge-lines or valleys, or cross a certain number of ridges or hills, on the way to your end destination.

How to Use a Compass

The first thing you need to know about your compass is that the needle always points North.

Compasses measure direction in degrees, which on a compass increase clockwise; East is at 90 degrees, South at 180, West at 270, and North at 360 or 0 degrees.

Practice With Your Compass at Home or a Park.

Cammenga 27 Phosphorescent Compass

Use the compass to find the bearing by using an attack point. While hiking, this point could be a spot in your backyard or a special tree in the park. Point the arrow on the base plate toward the item. Then turn the dial of the compass until North aligns with the red tip of the compass needle. The arrow will point to a number in degrees on the dial; this is the bearing for the landmark.

On the trail, you need to be aware of the difference between true North and magnetic North and that it varies from place to place on the Earth’s surface. Topographical maps almost always note the declination in the map scale. While often only a minor deviation from true North, it’s worth noting on each map and making adjustments on a compass for long headings or if the declination is particularly significant.

Learning how to read a map and compass can seem daunting. But with practice, this skill is hugely beneficial on the trail and if you're lost.

Tip: Demystify Map and Compass With Easy Orienteering Tips

Let's move on to talk about the importance of stying hydrated on the trail

Staying Properly Hydrated is one of the Keys to Comfort and Performance

No matter if you are going hiking, camping, or just playing in the playground, you should always bring water as it is essential to life.

To prevent dehydration, you need to drink water every day, and the hotter and harder you work, the more you will need to drink.

Participant Activity: Ask someone to come up and determine how much water you think they will need on a 4 hours hike in moderate temperature and terrain.

Plan for a half of a liter of water per hour in moderate temperatures and terrain

And if it is hotter or the terrain will be steep, then you will need to plan for more or bring something to purify your water. Even on a short hike, a few snacks are crucial to keeping everyone happy especially if you are taking the kids

What is the Amount of Water to Bring on a Hike?

<img alt="Suggested amount of water to bring on a strenuous hike up to 5 miles. Prioritize "dry" food and feel free to repackage it if the cardboard boxes and bagging is excessive.

Trail mix - almonds, rasins, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds

Ready-to-eat: Focus on foods that require minimal preparation (and cleanup). You will be hiking in the daytime and will not want to set up the stove to cook and dishes to clean. Make sure your meals and snacks are effortless so you can keep moving. Even for dinner at camp, most backpackers only cook "one-pot-meals."

High levels of nutrition: Hikers can burn up to 6,000 calories a day. In short, you need to consume a lot of macronutrients to balance out the high burn-rate. Educating yourself before buying a pack will give you greater comfort – and a more enjoyable time on the trail.

A couple considerations to keep in mind are the kind of activity you’ll be doing, the equipment you’ll need for that outing, your trip’s duration and your size. Here are a few tips for finding the best pack for your back.

Frame Type: External vs. Internal

External Pack
External frame packs generally have a greater carrying capacity than internal frame packs, which makes them ideal for carrying heavier loads over shorter distances (like packing out large game). They handle well when worn on established trails, but are a bit clunky if carving out your own path through trees and shrubs.

An external design allows for a more natural upright stance when walking than an internal frame. That, and your head won’t hit against the pack since it sits higher. Also, external packs generally offer better air circulation since the bag doesn’t lie directly against your back.

External frames typically offer three shapes: An S-shape, which fits closest to your body, yet holds the load away from your back for superb circulation; a straightened design; and a hip-wrap design in which a free-floating hip belt carries the bulk of the weight.

Internal Pack
These packs are made to carry lighter loads for longer distances. Their slimmer profile makes them more conducive than an external frame to maneuvering around branches and brambles. They hold the weight closer to your body for better balance overall. The hip belt holds 70% of the weight on the hips while the shoulder straps carry the rest.

These packs move more uniformly with your body than an external frame, which makes them ideal for intense range-of-motion activities, like cross-country skiing, climbing, bouldering and rock scrambling.

Internal packs are highly adjustable, which is great for varying trips and weights. They also make great travel companions if your trip includes airplane travel since the straps can be easily tucked in.

Internal frame packs come in a day pack style, or a larger extended-trip style, which are about two to three times larger than most day packs. Day packs are good for activities like climbing, while overnight packs are ideal for extended trips.

Determining Your Torso Fit
Each pack maker establishes their own guidelines for determining torso fit, so if you have a specific brand in mind, be sure to find out how they determine torso length before you buy. Generally speaking, the torso length is determined by measuring from the seventh vertebrae to just above your waistline.

Solicit help from a friend to take your measurements. Use a flexible seamstress measuring tape instead of a rigid carpentry-style for a more accurate measurement. Tuck your chin in to expose the seventh vertebra (the one that protrudes from the base of your neck). Then place your index fingers around the top of your hip bones with your thumbs extending behind your back. Draw an imaginary line from the tips of your thumbs to your spine. Take the measurement from the seventh vertebrae to this line to determine your torso length.

Most people’s torso lengths fall between 16" to 22". Generally, if your torso length is 18" and under, you’ll fit into a small pack. 20" is a medium and over 20" is a large pack.

Carrying Capacity
A weekend trip is quite different than a weeklong adventure, and the amount of gear needed for climbing will be much different than equipment needed for a daytrip. Carrying capacity is largely determined on the type of activity and the duration of your trip. Here are some general guidelines.

Less than 2,500 cubic inches:
Ideal for ultralight overnighters, climbing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing trips or any other high-intensity day-trip activity.

2,500 to 3,999 cubic inches:
The perfect range for weekend trips, excluding winter trips that require bulkier clothing and more equipment.

4,000 to 5,999 cubic inches:
Great for a winter weekend or a week or more any other time of the year.

6,000 cubic inches and over:
An ideal number for longer extended trips, winter camping or adventures requiring a lot of gear. It’s also the magic number for parents who will be hauling gear for their kids.

Features
The more features included into the pack, the more useful the pack will be to you in a variety of settings. Here are some features that make carrying-life easier.

Torso length ruler: Some packs come with a torso length ruler on the pack itself, which makes for less guesswork and greater accuracy when adjusting the pack’s length. It’s useful also if you intend to share a pack with someone of a different torso length.

Daisy chains: a.k.a. carabiner attachments. These are especially useful for climbers who need to carry extra gear on the outside. But remember, it is always better to carry objects inside the bag rather than dangling objects from the outside.

Sleeping bag separator: While the idea of a separator is not new, now some packs have a separator that can be unzipped, so you can either opt for a sleeping bag compartment or one large opened area.

Straps: Now days, straps are more comfortable than ever. An S-curve shoulder strap offers women a more snug fit. And some women’s packs now come with an adjustable sternum strap that slides vertically up and down the face of the pack. This allows you to position the strap in a position that won’t cut in to the chest area. Also, easy adjustability allows you to compensate for shifting loads while you’re out on the trails.

Back padding: Since the weight of an internal frame pack sits directly against the back, padding and air circulation are of utmost importance. The more mesh, the better airflow the pack gives you. For example, a trampoline-style back mesh panel is designed with a gap between the back and pack for maximum air circulation.

Built-in rain shell: Most packs are made with water-resistant material, but are not fully waterproof, so it’s important to own a rain cover. Some packs come with an attached shell, alleviating the need for an extra purchase.

Packing Lessons for Pack Rats
Of course, eliminating unnecessary objects from your pack is the first step in a more comfortable hike. Pack the heaviest objects in the middle, and cushioned between lighter objects that sit at the top and bottom. Pack medium-weight objects on the sides. It is a good idea to place food items and rainwear near the opening for easy access.

Try Before You Buy
A last word of advice when shopping for a pack; trying it on is the best way to feel how comfortable it is on your back. All packs will feel lightweight when they’re empty, so ask the store merchant to add weight before trying it on. You could even request using objects from the store comparable to the equipment you’ll be carrying on your trip. This will give you a more realistic idea of how it will feel when you’re out on the trail. Remember, a comfortable-fitting pack makes for happier trails. So the next time you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, throw on your new pack and comfortably carry only the things that matter.

Region

United States

Sun, 15 Mar 2020 19:23:18 +0000 Mathew Brost 23339 at http://production.basspro1source.com http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/23339/backpack-buyers-guide#comments Treat Your Feet To A Better Pair Of Socks – Buyer's Guide http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/27347/treat-your-feet-better-pair-socks-buyers-guide Treat Your Feet To A Better Pair Of Socks – Buyer's Guide

Mathew Brost Sat, 06/22/2019 - 16:00

Category

Hiking

<drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=27347&2=bookmark" token="-QOEmc7pebqllrtpzUwp9vD1xq_dKBCps52SOvagPDo"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=27347" token="fle8btHvs58JiIgh9WQAtPkWWbtVqg2vEXxUJ7bsr1U"></drupal-render-placeholder>

From thick to thin, we give you the inside scoop on socks.

Sock Weight
When you need to match the right kind of socks with your next adventure, ask yourself, "How strenuous is my activity?" If you plan on being on the move, you won't need as much weight as when participating in a sedentary activity. Snowshoeing, hiking and running are all good examples of activities that generally require lightweight socks. However, while hiking, walking, running and often wading, heavyweight socks may be required to avoid blisters and hot spots due to high amounts of friction. Snowmobiling, hunting from a treestand, waterfowling and ice fishing require less movement, so heavier-weight socks may be needed for warmth. Keeping these hints in mind, following is a rundown of the different sock weights available.

Liner Socks – Are typically worn as a base layer next to the skin. Liners can add to the functionality of technically advanced socks. They often move moisture away and keep your feet drier than using socks alone.

Lightweight/Casual Socks – Lightweight, casual, everyday socks are often used for early-season hunting. They effectively wick moisture without high levels of warmth retention. The soles may be padded for extra cushioning and support.

Medium-Weight Socks – Crafted for year-round comfort and moisture control, medium-weight socks are ideal for everyday hunting or hiking. Extra padding in the soles provide cushioning and comfort. These can be worn with liner socks for extra moisture management.

Heavyweight Socks – The heavier construction delivers superior warmth and moisture management. A good choice when you need extra warmth and bulk. Often offered in taller heights, they're perfect with hunting boots, pac boots, rubber boots, waders and taller boots. These also can be worn with liners for extra moisture management.

Sock Height
The next step in determining which socks are right for you is figuring out the height of socks you need. Most often this choice is directed by the height of the footwear your activity demands. Below are the various sock heights found on the market.

Micro – These socks usually fall below the ankles. Typically 3" in height, they're also called "no-show" socks.

Low-Cut – Short-height socks that fall below the ankles. These socks are typically 3" to 4" in height.

Quarter Height – Typically 4" to 6" in height, these socks are commonly called mini crew.

Midheight Crew – Sometimes called ¾ Crew, these socks are typically 7" to 8" in height.

Crew – These socks extend above the ankles, but not above the largest part of the calves. They are typically 9" to 12" in height.

Midcalf – Typically 13" to 13.5" in height, these socks extend to the middle of the calves.

Over-the-Calf – These socks extend above the largest part of the calves and are typically 15" in height or higher.

Sock Materials
After selecting the right weight and height, it is time to look at the various material/fibers to determine what best suits your needs, activity level and body type. Here is a rundown of the most-common fibers used in sock construction. Note that several of these fibers are blended together to give a good combination of warmth, wicking, support and padding.

Lumiza Acrylic – One of the few moisture-wicking acrylic fibers on the market. This advanced fiber contains micropores with capillary action for quick moisture transfer and evaporation. Although it is a lightweight fiber, it has superior insulation qualities. It's also soft, breathable and quick to dry.

Polypropylene – A superior water-repelling fiber that won't accept moisture. It is used alone or with absorbent outer layers that work to wick moisture away from your feet. It is strong and has the lowest specific gravity (lightest) of any synthetic fiber. It is sometimes labeled as olefin.

Nylon – A strong, versatile, hard-wearing fiber. Socks made of nylon can be thin and silky or bulky and highly elastic. Nylon is often blended with or used over the top of other fibers to add stretch or to improve durability.

Spandex – A synthetic fiber that provides elasticity, recovery and a close fit. Most often, it is woven into the fabric for a top-to-toe stretch that holds the leg in place. This uniform elasticity adds overall comfort and a snug fit.

Wool – The original easy-care fiber. Wool fibers are made up of millions of coiled springs that stretch during use, but coil back to their original positions. Inherent qualities include wrinkle resistance, colorfastness, shape recovery and breathability. Knit into various weights, wool provides exceptional insulation for every temperature. Wool yarn, when knitted into a thicker sock, tends to be bulky and lofty. This high-loft structure traps air, body heat warms it up and this makes wool socks an ideal insulator. Wool socks also keep feet drier because wool absorbs as much as 30% of its own weight before your feet feel damp.

Merino Wool – A fine-grade wool that comes from merino sheep. It has the characteristics classic to wool, but it boasts a luxurious softness provided by the fine-diameter merino fibers. Merino wool does not itch and it's shrink-treated to hold its size and shape, even after repeated washings.

Dri-release® Fabrics with FreshGuard® – These patented fabrics are crafted of synthetic and natural fibers. These blends boast hydrophobic and hydrophilic yarns that are scientifically blended to maximize moisture-absorption and quick-drying properties. The result – they never feel clammy or sticky against the skin. The fabric-embedded FreshGuard treatment found in all Dri-release fabrics neutralizes odors for up to 50 washings.

Thermax Polyester – Hollow-core fibers trap a layer of warm air around the foot while transporting perspiration to the outer layer of the moisture-wicking fabric. This heat-retaining fabric offers great softness and wicking ability.

Thermolite Polyester –This lightweight, breathable fabric combines a thermally efficient polymer and micro-sized hollow-core fibers. This advanced fabric traps air, warms it quickly and it pulls moisture away from the skin.

CoolMax Polyester – This advanced four-channel fiber quickly and effectively pulls moisture away from skin and its quick-drying breathability speeds up the evaporation of perspiration. This keeps feet dry and comfortable.

Elastic – This fiber features a rubber or spandex core that's covered with nylon. It provides an extreme stretch and recovery that's often used to create support braces in the arch or ankle areas of the socks.

Cotton – An organic, lightweight, moisture-absorbing fiber. No other fabric offers the comfort and feel of this natural fiber. It's also breathable, washable and biodegradable.

Treatments
There are some effects you may want that a material or fabric blend can't deliver on it's own. Using advanced treatments, many of today's socks include durable treatments that add to the material's performance. Here are a few examples:

Nanoglide® – 100% permanent, this advanced treatment never washes out. Using millions of PTFT microchannels, it wicks moisture away at a maximum speed keeping you cool and dry. Its other high-performance properties help eliminate heat, moisture, friction, and abrasion for less skin irritation, less heat build- up and more comfort.

Anti-Odor Technology – Many of today's high-performance socks include odor-fighting technology. These varied and safe treatments inhibit the growth of the microbes that cause unwanted odors. Chemically based odor-fighting treatments often defend freshness for up to 50 washings. Anti-odor technology has expanded to include metal-based treatments that virtually eliminate the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. These copper-ion and silver-ion technologies infuse the fabric with negatively charged nanotechnology. Proven effective, these treatments reduce odors and maintain a neutral smell.

Matching the perfect pair of socks with your outdoor adventure might not be easy, but it becomes easier when you consider the following breakdown. For sock weight, remember to think about the temperature outside and your adventure's activity level. Heavyweight socks are best for low activity in the cold. Medium-weight socks are best for high activity in the cold. And low-weight socks are the best when temperatures are warm to hot. Sock height is often decided by the height of the footwear your adventure demands. When choosing the materials and treatments available, take your time. Examine each description looking for the advantages that would best serve to maximize your outdoor comfort. Weigh out your options, make an informed decision and enjoy the perfect pair of socks for your next adventure.

Sat, 22 Jun 2019 21:00:29 +0000 Mathew Brost 27347 at http://production.basspro1source.com http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/27347/treat-your-feet-better-pair-socks-buyers-guide#comments Radio Communication Buyer's Guide http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/24902/radio-communication-buyers-guide Radio Communication Buyer's Guide

Mathew Brost Mon, 06/17/2019 - 10:35

Category

Hiking

<drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=24902&2=bookmark" token="FUdiuAfxanFB6VX5lHaj0kKCKh1WyF2XKs5fINVOEfE"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=24902" token="6q3mKtrCYNf1wBwnoOX259rR8XmMLYEtn-7Pvj_2PGw"></drupal-render-placeholder>

The push-to-talk feature on many cell phones is a handy innovation, but for the outdoorsman who traverses remote locations, where cell towers are nonexistent or severely limited by mountainous terrain, the best solution is a pair of portable radios.

If you haven’t looked at this product line in a while, you’re going to be amazed at the advances in this form of personal communication devices. One of the things that you’ll notice first is there are many brands on the market, and many of them have similar features. To determine which features are right for you, and which have the most value added, let’s separate the basics from the bells and whistles.

Once you understand the acronyms, sport radios are nothing more than "souped up" versions of the walkie-talkies you used when you were a kid. To narrow your search, the first decision to consider is band choice.

Band Choice – One of the main differences in sport radios is the frequency or bandwidth used to transmit your voice from one radio to another. Both FRS and GMRS radios share channels 1 through 7.

FRS: The Family Radio Service (FRS) is a series of 14 channels in the 462Mhz and 467MHz range, set aside by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for use by sportsmen and their families. This band is free of interference from business and government agencies. FRS radios are usually small, use low power output, and are ideal for communicating with hunting partners, family members back at camp, or for overall peace of mind. Also, an important issue for some, FRS band radios require no special license by the FCC. Depending on terrain, the range of FRS band radios can be up to two miles. But, keep in mind that two-way radios are dependent on line-of-sight transmissions. You don’t need a tower to communicate, but if the person you want to talk to goes over or around a mountain, your ability to communicate will be severely hampered.

GMRS: The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a series of specific frequencies in the 462MHz range set up by the FCC. If you’re planning on hooking up with another group that uses GMRS radios, and talking with them, make sure you have the same frequencies installed. GMRS radios must have crystals or programming for each of the numerous possible channels, therefore channel 1 on any given radio may or may not be the same channel as channel 1 on another radio. Again it depends on terrain, but GMRS radios can have a much larger talk range, extending up to 18 miles. While usually slightly larger than an FRS unit, GMRS radios will give you increased range in a unit that is still compact enough to take virtually anywhere. However, to use the 10 available channels on the GMRS band, you are required to obtain a license from the FCC. Should you choose to purchase a license, they are available for a small fee at FCC’s Universal Licensing System page: http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/.

Interference Eliminator Codes – Portable radios have become so common that when used in well-populated areas, it is possible that someone else has chosen to use the same channel as you. Common FRS radios have from 38 up to 121 interference codes to help prevent this. The interference codes will help filter out static, noise and unwanted chatter on the two-way radio channels. All you do is pick a predetermined channel and code, and you can communicate only with someone using the same channel and code. While they do not guarantee privacy, with 22 FRS channels and 121 codes, you will have up to 2,662 frequencies to use for private communication.

Power – As with any radio device, the power of the transmitting signal is listed in watts. FRS radios vary in power from 0.2 to 0.5 watts, while GMRS radios range from 2 watts all the way up to 5 watts. The more watts, the greater the range and clarity at any given distance. To save on batteries when operating close, some units have the option to select low, medium or high power.

Battery Type – Portability requires an internal battery, and the most common source of power is AA alkaline batteries. However, if you use your radio a lot, battery replacement can become burdensome. Slightly more expensive models use a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium rechargeable battery. Both of these options are convenient, more economical over time and last much longer in the field. Depending on the radio model and available accessories, you can then use either a 120-volt power source at home, or a 12-volt power source to recharge your radio’s batteries and never lose touch due to loss of power.

VOX Operation – Voice Operated Transmission (VOX) is offered on some models in which the radio transmission is activated by voice tone only. This feature is extremely handy to allow hands-free operation when attention must remain on the task at hand, such as driving a vehicle.

Call Alerts – This is a handy feature in populated areas. Select radios will have a choice of different call alerts, or tones, to notify users of an incoming transmission. It’s a great way to get the user’s attention before starting to talk, and eliminates repeating messages. Some models offer wildlife ring tones that are less obtrusive in the woods. Certain models even have a vibrate alert, which works great in a hunting situation. With the alert, you can leave the volume turned down and avoid the unwanted intrusion of drawing on the buck of a lifetime, only to have your buddy buzz in and ask, "You ready for lunch?"

Eavesdrop Reducer – This unique feature uses voice inversion technology to help scramble transmissions among users using the same channel and code on FRS radios. Some models have a choice of three settings. You and your partners simply pick the same channel, interference code and eavesdrop reducer setting, and thus make it more difficult for other FRS radios to eavesdrop on your conversations.

Additional Features – In many of the higher-end radios, more features perfect for the outdoors are added. Some will have GPS, low-battery alert, roger beep, NOAA weather receivers and a battery meter in the LCD.

Accessories – Many accessories are available to make your radio as user-friendly as possible. Some of the more common ones are protective or waterproof cases, headsets, earpieces, shoulder and belt holsters, rechargeable batteries and various charging units.

Once you’ve purchased a pair of sport radios, you’ll find lots of handy uses besides hunting, fishing or hiking. I’ve used them to keep an electronic leash on my kids at large events. This gives them the freedom to roam, and I still have the ability to check on their whereabouts from time to time or issue a total recall. Radios eliminate a lot of yelling and worry as well. When you leave camp with an expected time to return, if you get delayed it only takes a minute to adjust your ETA and let everyone know you’re okay. They’re also handy when caravanning with another vehicle on a long trip. In fact, once you have a set of sport radios, you’ll wonder just how you got along without them.

Mon, 17 Jun 2019 15:35:01 +0000 Mathew Brost 24902 at http://production.basspro1source.com http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/24902/radio-communication-buyers-guide#comments Hiking Boots Buyer's Guide http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/23348/hiking-boots-buyers-guide Hiking Boots Buyer's Guide

Mathew Brost Sat, 04/20/2019 - 15:40

Category

Hiking

<drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=23348&2=bookmark" token="MvtZcjLlToc_iS_CYxOwzWvp-tLfd9CGrn4EYEZ_vLU"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=23348" token="LAES9nZCNrBMn866nZLprFcjUr8KLouF76oq317BrDI"></drupal-render-placeholder>

Hiking boots have come a long way since the 1980s when athletic-shoe-style hiking boots were first introduced. The type of material used to construct the uppers impacts their weight, breathability, warmth factor, durability and water-protection level. Most leather uppers are waterproof, and nearly all are extremely supportive and durable, which makes leather a top choice for uppers. Uppers constructed from a single piece of material will have great water resistance, too.

Full-grain leather - Taken from the cowhide’s exterior.

Suede - Flexible and breathable, but not as supportive and definitely not waterproof.

Reverse full-grain leather - Full-grain leather turned inside out for a rough texture.

Nubuck - Brushed to remove or hide irregularities.

Mesh - Used in combination with leather for breathability.

Synthetics - Polyester, nylon and man-made leathers. Lighter than leather and quick drying, boots made from these have a quicker breaking-in period. May wear out sooner than leather boots.

Chart showing the parts of a hiking boot credit, Athlete
Audit

Other components of the boot uppers - Every piece plays an important role, and understanding these will help you choose the right boots.

Toe boxes - Also called rands, these act as bumpers to surround and protect your toes. These are made of rubber or plastic material, and also provide waterproof seals between the soles and uppers.

Collars - Sit atop the uppers, and help stabilize and cushion the ankles and Achilles tendons as well as prevent debris from getting into your boots.

Heel cups - Also called heel counters, these cradle and support the heels, minimizing the chances of your shoes lifting off your ankles when you walk, thereby helping prevent blisters. They also offer lower-ankle stability.

Liners - Sometimes built into the uppers to increase water repellency and aid in warmth retention in colder temperatures. Most beneficial for fabric uppers.

Soles - Hiking boots’ soles have three components: insoles, midsoles and outsoles. The soles are attached to the uppers with either stitching or adhesive. While stitched soles are easier to replace, glued or cemented soles are lighter and more flexible.

Insoles - Often removable, these directly touch and cushion your feet.

Midsoles - Provide stability and disperse weight. Incorporated shanks made of plastic or steel provide stiffness and even more support to the bottom of the boots.

Compression-molded EVA - A foamlike material, ethyl vinyl acetate is extremely lightweight.

Injection-molded EVA - Hot plastics are injected into a mold for more uniform density from heel to toe. Lightweight without the need for stitching, these midsoles are more waterproof than soles with stitching because there are fewer seams.

PU - Short for polyurethane, this is relatively heavier but offers durable support with greater impact resistance and shock absorption

TPR - Short for thermoplastic rubber, this material is flexible like leather, but lighter, washable and more durable.

Ascend Lisco Waterproof Hikers

Outsoles - Made of rubber and sometimes hardened with carbon for durability, these are what help keep you on your feet. Most have lugs on the bottoms - protruding rubber tips that provide traction and help shed mud. Lugs vary in size according to the type of shoes they’re on. Note that extra-hardened outsoles can feel slippery if you go off trail.

Hiking Boot Technologies Pros & Cons

Knowing the pros and cons and necessity of different weatherproofing technologies that are out there for footwear will help ensure you have the right boots for the job without spending too much or buying something you don’t need.

Water-resistant vs. Waterproof - Water-resistant fabrics and treatments shed water but don’t prevent water from soaking through to your feet once your boots are saturated. Waterproof liners and laminates applied to seals and uppers 100% block water from soaking through to your feet.

RedHead Front Range Hiking Boots

Breathability - Make sure that if your boots are waterproof, they’re also breathable. Most high-quality waterproof treatments make the fabric weave smaller than a water molecule, but large enough for air to escape through. This helps keep your feet drier and therefore warmer in cold weather.

Understanding the Hiking Boot Types & Function

Light/Active Hiking Boots - These beefed-up running shoes are designed for one- to two-day hikes that involve carrying a light load when you feel the call to tread off the beaten path.

Usually lightweight and flexible with limited ankle support due to lower cuts, these feature combination uppers of leather and mesh for overall support and breathability, sometimes at the cost of little to no water protection. Conservative tread and lugs make these best for maintained trails, and these usually have a short breaking-in period.

Midweight/Traditional Hiking Boots - The most versatile of hiking-boot options, these are designed for walking over varying terrain with moderate inclines, and can support your feet, arches and ankles with enough cushion and comfort for carrying midweight to heavy packs. Uppers are usually a combination of leather and synthetics, giving them abrasion resistance and water protection.

Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX GORE-TEX
Hiking Boots for Men - great for
lightweight hiking & backpacking

Midsoles are stiffer with durable, lightweight outsoles that are sturdy enough to withstand aggressive mileage. These are offered in different cuts &#— low, mid and high heights — making them ideal not only for hiking but trail running, fastpacking and training.

Backpacking/Mountain Boots - Designed for multiple days on the trail or deep backcountry trips with extreme terrain and the most relentless weather, these support you the best when you’re carrying a heavy pack. Designed so you can tackle the harshest Mother Nature offers, these are as stout as they get - durable, supportive, waterproof, breathable and warm.

Their high-shaft leather uppers provide maximum ankle support, and have stiff midsoles to protect your feet from rocky terrain. Deep, aggressive tread and longer lugs shed mud and debris better. These are also heavier, and can have longer break-in periods.

When to Replace Your Hiking Boots

Like any equipment, hiking boots are going to wear out; when they wear out depends on how long you’ve had them, how much you’ve worn them and what kind of weather they’ve been through. Knowing when they’re shot is key to ensuring a positive outdoor experience as well as having healthy feet to carry you through to your next excursion. But it doesn’t have to be. We’ve distilled what can be a very complicated process down to the basics.

If you’re going to navigate across the ocean or vast expanses of land, you probably want to learn beyond these simple basics. But for most people, these steps will get you into the forest to a given point and, most importantly, back home again.

Click for larger view of the topographic map guide.

Orient the Map

This is the most important step, so important that there is an entire sport (orienteering) named after it.

Orient the map page to mimic your environment. This means turn the top of the map (north) to face north in the real world, no matter which direction you’re facing.

For example, if you’re standing on a trail looking north, holding a map horizontally in your hands, the map can be held normally, all text and characters right side up. But if you face south, the map should be read upside down, with the top of the page still facing north. Ditto if you turn to face east or west: Keep the top side of the page always to the north. This technique keeps landforms and features mirrored to their representation on the printed page.

Navigate Compass Confusion

There are lots of features to a compass, but for the vast majority of woodland navigation, follow one simple rule: All you need to know is north.

Modern compasses come loaded with mirrors, rotating base plates, degree markings, spinning dials, and sights. In the vast majority of navigational undertakings, all these accouterments are superfluous. All that matters is north, magnetic north, to be precise.

A quick glance at the compass to see where the needle is pointing — and thus which direction you should orient the map — is the primary.

What are Topographic Lines?

These parallel lines represent hills and valleys on your map. They also present you with some of the easiest-to-follow landmarks in any landscape. With your map oriented to the north (and your known starting point), it is easy to choose routes that follow ridge-lines or valleys, or cross a certain number of ridges or hills, on the way to your end destination.

What are Landmark Attack Points?

A common technique to find a precise location on a map is called an “attack point.” This is an obvious landmark used as a directional aid. For example, if your destination is deep in featureless forest, identify a nearby trail junction, river bend, or other obvious geographic feature. Then restart navigation once you reach the prominent feature (the attack point).

From this established and obvious point, estimate the direction and distance on the map, take a compass bearing, and count your steps.

What is the Declination in a Map

This is simply the difference between true north and magnetic north and it varies from place to place on the Earth’s surface. Topographical maps almost always note the declination in the map scale. While often only a minor deviation from true north, it’s worth noting on each map and making adjustments on a compass for long headings or if the declination is particularly significant.

What Does it Mean to Thumb Your Position on a Map?

To speed travel and map reading, keep a tab of where you are by holding a thumb on your map. This trick allows quick and precise navigation and is a trick often employed by serious orienteers.

As you travel along, move your thumb to the new place on the page to represent your current position. This keeps you aware of your point on the course at all times, speeding navigational decisions and allowing you to always know where you are in the woods. This step really helps when for example, you're in a landscape with repeating features.

Region

International

Tags

Topographic Map

hiking tips

Hiking Gear

Backpacking Tip

Camping tip

How To Guide

Survival tip

Fri, 07 Nov 2014 23:53:15 +0000 1Source Outdoors 6321 at http://production.basspro1source.com http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/6321/demystify-map-and-compass-with-easy-orienteering-tips-anyone-can-use#comments 5 Essential Items for Every Daypack http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/6114/5-essential-items-every-daypack 5 Essential Items for Every Daypack

Robert Loewendick Fri, 08/22/2014 - 06:00

Category

Hiking

<drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=6114&2=bookmark" token="8WO--BeLyK5modosYi3D8nlHjkQ4v65yoSDSMzYq7mU"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&1=6114" token="oqD31d1ItGkfZq7aVKmkvkDQp-aefDgFu8z7abcxEL4"></drupal-render-placeholder>

Day hiking for most folks is a much needed, quick getaway from life's demands. She was adamant about being on time for several reasons, primarily for your safety and for her sanity.

Waiting up for your kid to return home safely is nerve racking. So is waiting for a returning hiker. When he or she is late to arrive from hiking or to meet at a planned spot or trailhead, dreadful scenarios begin to run through the waiting party's mind.

That's why it's important to pay close attention when planning a hike and be realistic when calculating the time it takes for you to complete it.

How to Calculate Hike Time

The typical walking speed of an adult is two miles per hour on level ground. However, there are factors that will impact hiking time, such as terrain, weather, sightseeing stops and other time consuming activities. So when calculating the time needed to complete a hike, take each factor into consideration.

And just because the trail roams down a hill or two, don't think that time will be gained by going downhill faster. Knees take a pounding on descents, so stay with two miles per hour as an accurate average for planning.

If you do find yourself behind schedule, adjust your stops and sightseeing duties to allow more time spent moving along to reach your destination on time. Picking up the pace is fine, as long as you are mindful of not putting too much stress on the body. Once you are physically spent, the entire time schedule is off and injuries are likely to occur.

If you have left your hike plan with relative or friend, which you always should, and if you have cell phone signal, give them a call and let them know you are running late. Remember to plan your hike and hike your plan. Doing so will keep your home base person informed and relaxed — even a worried momma.

Region

International

Tags

hiking tips

Outdoor Tips

Fri, 08 Aug 2014 11:00:00 +0000 Robert Loewendick 6143 at http://production.basspro1source.com http://production.basspro1source.com/news-tips/hiking/6143/importance-timing-your-hike-right#comments
