Rapala Fishing Lures History

Lauri Rapala was born in Finland over a century ago, in 1905. When he was in his 20's, he moved to the town of Riihilanti to try to make a living as a fisherman. While waiting for the nets to fill with perch and whitefish, he would row his wooden boat, trying to catch a trout with lures to add to the catch.

I reluctantly admit that, having fished for over 40 years, I qualify as "old school." So it took me a while to warm up to the new generation of braided fishing lines.

Spinnerbaits are one of the most popular lures in freshwater fishing. From pike to bass, these baits are responsible for putting plenty of trophies in photo collections and payouts in tournament anglers' pockets.

I'm fishing as the bell sinker telegraphed the contours of the rocky bottom. When I tapped bottom, I reeled up slightly to keep the sinker off bottom to prevent snags. Working the tiller motor, I slowly trolled along the breakline. Several feet behind the sinker, a blue and white minnowbait wiggled while I waited. It didn't take long for a hungry lake trout to hit trebles and after some impressive runs, the battle was over.

The bass market is saturated with an endless supply of lures.

Anglers are a conscientious bunch.
